Phonics and Reading

Springfield Infant School places a great emphasis on children’s acquisition of basic skills, including phonics and reading skills.  The school uses the Jolly Phonics scheme in EYFS to introduce children to the letter sounds alongside the Letters and Sounds phonics scheme ( http://www.letters-and-sounds.com/what-is-letters-and-sounds.html.)  By Year 2 the children are ready to begin the Read Write Inc spelling programme which matches the new National Curriculum.

Children are encouraged to read a variety of books, including e-books through the on-line Bug Club.  Bug Club is an exciting on-line reading resource.  It is accessed through www.activelearnprimary.co.uk and each child has their own username and password.

Usernames and passwords are issued in school soon after children start in Reception.  Children can access their online reading account from home PC computers, laptops, iPads and some Android tablets. The children also have opportunities to use Bug Club in school.  Bug Club books are all phonic based.

All children also have access to three other library areas in school to choose books.  They choose books from their class book boxes, their year group library and they also have a weekly library session in the main School Library. These three books are brought home with reading diaries in each child’s book bag.

We expect each child to share their books at home each day and for this to be recorded in their reading diary.  Please see our Home School Reading Policy  for more details about reading and phonics at Springfield Infant School.
